Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a combined product between a rubbery polybutadiene and a 1,2-syndiotactic polybutadiene, which can provide vulcanized rubbers having a high modulus of elasticity, by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in two stages in the presence of two types of catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: In polymerizing 1,3-butadiene, the first-stage polymerization is carried out in the presence of (A) an organic Al compound represented by the formula: AlR3, wherein R is alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, (B) a halogenated phenol and (C) a Co compound catalyst, and subsequently carrying out the second-stage polymerization in the presence of a 1,2-syndiotactic polymerization catalyst containing at least the organic Al compound (A) and the Co compound (C), thereby producing a mixture comprising the rubbery polybutadiene produced in the first-stage polymerization, the 1,2-syndiotactic polybutadiene produced in the second-stage polymerization and a polybutadiene consisting of both the polybutadienes combined with each other.
