Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify the titled compound readily, by passing an aqueous solution of acrylamide obtained through catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile in the presence of a catalyst through a free type strongly basic anion exchange resin layer, and then an H type cation exchange resin layer.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is catalytically hydrated in the presence of a catalyst containing copper, e.g. copper in the form of a copper wire and copper ions, at 20W 200°C to give an aqueous solution of acrylamide. The resultant aqueous solution is then passed through the layer of a free type strongly basic anion exchange resin, e.g. Amberlite IRA-402 (manufactured by Rohm & Haas Co.) and then the layer of an H type cation exchange resin, e.g. Amberlite IR-120B, to give a high-quality aqueous solution of acrylamide. The solution is passed through the layers at 60°C or below.
EFFECT: A raw material for an acrylamide polymer used in a paper strength improver or high polymer coagulant.
