Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous acrylamide obtained by hydration of acrylonitrile is treated with an ion-exchange resin and active carbon to remove impurities, thus producing good-quality acrylamide aqueous solution that can be used to produce high-molecular flocculant.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is catalytically hydrated in the presence of a catalyst containing copper to form an aqueous acrylamide solution. Then, the solution is treated with an H-form strong-acid cationic exchange resin and subsequently with an OH-form strong-base aninon exchange resin. Additionally, the resultant solution is treated with active carbon to remove unreacted acrylonitrile, ionic substances, by- products and so on, thus effecting purification to high degree. The resultant, product is especially suitable for use as a raw material of acrylamide high-molecular flocculant.
