Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the pressure and heat energy of hot and high pressure gas exhausted from the oxidation reaction step of an alkylaromatic hydrocarbon, effectively, without troubles such as corrosion and freezing, by passing the gas through an expansion engine before condensation.
CONSTITUTION: The oxidation reaction gas exhausted from the oxidation reactor for the production of an aromatic carboxylic acid by the oxidation of an alkyl- aromatic hydrocarbon with an O2-containing gas in a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid solution, is passed directly to an expansion engine (e.g. a gas turnbine) or passed through a heat exchanger (pref. a steam generator) to an expansion engine, to recover the energy of the exhaust gas in the form of e.g. kinetic energy. The exhaust gas from the expansion engine is introduced to a condenser to remove the most part of the condensing components such as water, solvent, etc. The order of the heat exchanger and the expansion engine is arbitrary, however, it is preferable to place the steam generator to the upstream when a large amount of steam is required.
