Abstract

PURPOSE: To achieve the reduction in the number of voltage applied display segments by twist-orienting the liquid crystal of segment parts and homeotropic-orienting the other parts.
CONSTITUTION: An electrode substrate 2 is subjected to twist orienting treatment, after which the segment parts 3 are masked and are subjected to homeotropic- orientating treatment. If the polarization directions of polarizing plates grasping the liquid crystal cells therebetween are made parallel, the segment portions 3 are shut off of light in a no-voltage-applied state and since the light passes through the other parts, the dark display segments on the bright ground are visible to the observer. The displaying is accomplished by applying voltage to the unnecessary segments, to homeotropically orient the liquid crystal in said parts thereby making them of the same color as that of the ground. Since voltage is applied on the unnecessary segments only, the number of the segments to be applied with voltage in the case of successively displaying figures from 0 up to 9 is decreased to 23 from conventional 47, thus the saving of power consumption is accomplished.
