Abstract
PURPOSE: A waste liquid containing chloroisocyanuric acid is mixed with ammonia or an ammonium salt at a specific pH and a specific oxidation-reduction potential to obtain high-purity crystals of cyanuric acid safely and inexpensively in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A waste liquid containing chlorocyanuric acid or its salt is combined with ammonia or an ammonium salt at a pH of 4W9 and an oxidation-reduction potential of 300W1,200mV and the crystals of cyanuric acid precipitated are separated. The process is preferably divided into two stages, that is, the first stage where the chloroisocyanuric acid contacts with ammonia and the second stage where cyanuric acid is crystallized. The first stage is effected in a neutral or acidic condition, while the second one is conducted in an alkaline condition, thus preventing the formation of dangerous nitrogen trichloride and increasing the amount of the objective compound precipitated.
EFFECT: The use of a reducing agent free from sulfate ion can avoid the formation of insoluble salts such as calcium sulfate to give the high-purity objective compound.
