Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish quantitative evaluation of variations in lines such as hair lines by determining a correlation coefficient from two surface roughness curves measured at the right angle to the machining direction.
CONSTITUTION: A ground surface machined in the Y axis is illustrated as follows. Initially, a surface roughness F1(x) is measured in the x axis perpendicular to the machining direction and then, similraly, a surface roughness F2(x) is measured at a position deviated by α in the machining direction. The correlation coefficient R12(τ) between the two curves F1(x) and F2(x) is as given in the formula II. The correlation coefficient K by normalizing this is as shown in the formula I. This enables quantitative evaluation of straightness and variations in lines such as hair lines and cut hair.
