PURPOSE: To operate pumps in a safety area without generating cavitation by detecting the change of the sound-pressure level in cavitation sound-waves for controlling the number of pumps on the basis of a previously-set sound-pressure level at the limit of causing cavitation damage.
CONSTITUTION: For example, when a sound-pressure level signal from a sensor 3a indicates a higher level than a sound-pressure set in a function generator 5 during the operation of a single pump 2a, the pump is judged to be operating within the cavitation area. At this stage, a command to start a pump 2b is issued from a comparison computing element 6 via a cable 7a for reducing the actual discharge of the pump 2a, and the pump 2b is additionally started for making a safety operation. Conversely, for example, at the intermission of the pump 2b during the parallel operation of the pumps 2a and 2b, when the sound-pressure level is confirmed to be out of the cavitation area, the operation of the pump 2a is continued even if the actual discharge of the pump 2a is increased.
