Abstract
PURPOSE: To minimize the wear of a furnace wall and improve refining efficiency, by making the lower part of a tiltable refining vessel hemispherical, shaping its upper part as a truncated cone and placing the maximum-diameter section of the upper part in contact with the hemispherical part.
CONSTITUTION: The part 2a of the inside of a refining vessel 1, which is not higher than the free surface 7a of a molten metal 7, is made hemispherical. The other part 2b of the inside not lower than the free surface of the molten metal is shaped as a truncated cone. As a result, the flame of a preheating burner 11 is well introduced into the vessel 1 to improve heating efficiency. When the molten metal is received, the vessel 1 is inclined opposite a tuyere 5 so that splashes 12 are unlikely to reach the tuyere and the tuyere does not get clogged with the molten metal. In heating, the distance L between the inside surface of the vessel 1 and an electrode 10 is maximized so that the damage of the vessel 1 due to arc is minimized. At that time, the temperature difference between the upper and the lower portions of the molten metal is reduced. When the vessel is inclined in refinement, the depth of the molten metal does not decreasce because the cross-sectional area of the upper part of the vessel is reduced. As a result, the loci and staying time of blown-in gas and powder in the molten metal are kept long.
