Abstract
PURPOSE:To make branching and directional coupling possible with simple tool parts, by inserting plural optical fibers into the inside hole of a metal sleeve by superposing and by making the superposed face of optical fibers into a plane by applying pressure to the sleeve. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber 1 consists of plastic or glass core 2 and plastic ground 3. This optical fiber is inserted to inside hole 5 of sleeve 4 by superposition, and pressure is applied to sleeve 4. At this time, optical fiber 1 deforms core 2 as well as ground 3 according to applied pressure. Since the form of this deformation resembles the form dependent upon polishing, the polishing process can be omitted. The coupling quantity can be controlled by the control of the deformation quantity depondent upon applied pressure. Thus, branching and directional coupling can be performed with simple tool parts.
