Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-purity phenol, by reacting a phenol which contains a carboxylic acid as an impurity, with an alkali carbonate to convert the carboxylic acid into a salt thereof selectively, and removing the salt selectively with ease and high efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: A high-purity phenol is obtained by reacting a phenol which mainly contains a carboxylic acid as an impurity (e.g. a substituted phenol obtained by the acid decomposition of a substituted isopropyl peroxide, etc), with an alkali carbonate (e.g. sodium or potassium carbonate). The carboxylic acid is selectively converted into an alkali salt thereof which is removed by elution to give the high- purity phenol without loss thereof.
