Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in the ductility and rolled characteristics of weld zones by subjecting high Si or high Si and Al content silicon steel strips to butt welding by using a heating source of high energy densty and limiting welding heat input to the specific quantity or less. CONSTITUTION:In butt welding of strip materials of silicon steels containing Si up to 3.5wt% or silicon steels containing further Al up to 1wt%, a heating source of high energy density such as laser or electron beam is used and the welding heat input taking the depth of welding into account is limited to <=10,000J/cm<2>. These prevent the crystal grains of the heat affected zone of base metals from coarsening. Hence, the degradation in the ductility and rolled characteristics of the heat affected zone of the base metals and further weld metal may be prevented.
