Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the degradation in the toughness and fatigue characteristics at the field welding and prevent crazing in a cold district by welding a low sulfur and low hydrogen steel of a high grade only to the weld joining portions of rails.
CONSTITUTION: A high grade steel or alloy steel 1b applied with desulfurization or dehydrogenation is welded in a shop, in such a manner as not to permit coarsening of metal structure, to both ends of the steel portions 1a of the same low hydrogen and low sulfur as those of conventional rails, on the inner side of the weld line 2 of rails 1. On a laying site in a cold district, the high grade steel or alloy ateel portions 1b of the rails 1 are welded to each other, thus the rails are connected without any adverse influence as in the prior art.
