Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled corresponding olefin very simply in high purity and yield, by bringing an alcohol into contact with a mountain leather which is a porous needlelike clay, e.g. sepiolite or attapulgite, under heating.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol, e.g. an aliphatic or alicyclic monohydric alcohol or polyhydric alcohol, is brought into contact with a mountain leather at 300W400°C to give the corresponding olefin. The mountain leather is usually a porous needlelike clay called mountain cork, etc., and sepiolite as magnesium silicate expressed by the formula Mg8 [Si12]O30(OH)4(OH2)4.8H2O is one of the preferred mountain leathers. The mountain leathers may be directly used, however, usually used after the heat-treatment at 230W800°C. A metal of Groups IIa, IIIa and IVa in the periodic table may be further supported on the surfaces of the mountain leathers. The mountain leathers used for the reaction are reusable after calcining at 300W550°C.
