Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a high-MW styrene polymer which is low in residual monomer content and excellent in mechanical strength, by bulk- or suspension-polymerizing a styrene type monomer by use of a catalyst prepared by combining specified organic peroxides.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene type monomer is polymerized by use of a catalyst prepared by combining at least one member selected from (A) ditert-butyl peroxyisophthalate and 1,4-bis(tert-butyl peroxycarbonyl)cyclohexane with at least one member selected from (B) tert-butyl peracetate and tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (the weight ratio between both components is about 1:2W3:1). In this polymerization, the amount of catalyst is about 0.01W0.5wt% based on the monomer, and a temperature of about 80W150°C is preferred.
