Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound by the reaction of dimethylamine containing a specific amount or less of methylamine with allyl chloride, and to obtain its high-molecular weight polymer which is useful as a polyelectrolyte and does not form water-insoluble gels, by the polymerization of the titled compound thus produced.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably 2W2.5mol allyl chloride and 1W1.5mol alkali, e.g. NaOH, are mixed with 1mol dimethylamine containing 250ppm or less (preferably 100ppm or less) methylamine and gradually heated, preferably under reflux of the allyl chloride at about 45°C. The unreacted substances and by-products are separated from the reaction product to give diallyldimethylammonium chloride, which is then polymerized to afford a polymer thereof. The formation of water-insoluble gels can be prevented, and a high polymer can be obtained by decreasing the methylamine content.
