Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 2,5-substituted metadioxane derivative of formula I (n is 0, 1 or 2; R1 and R2 are H or 1W10C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 2-(4-n-Pentylcyclohexyl)trans-5-n-butyl-1,3-dioxane.
USE: A material for a liquid crystal, having improved practical performance of temperature range, operating voltage, response characteristics etc., and useful as a constituting component of a stable liquid crystal composition.
PROCESS: A carboxylic acid of formula II is reacted with a halogenating agent, e.g. thionyl chloride, to give an acid chloride, which is then hydrogenated in an inert solvent in the presence of a reducing catalyst to afford an aldehyde of formula III. The resultant aldehyde is then reacted with propanediol in an inert organic solvent, e.g. benzene, in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. aluminum chloride, at atmospheric pressure and the reflux temperature to give the compound of formula I.
