Abstract
PURPOSE:To secure a high-efficiency transmission and storage for the picture signals of the photograph or the like, by securing a proper adaptive coding according to the picture state of each block by setting the threshold level to a proper value. CONSTITUTION:Arithmetic circuit 2 calculates mean density -x of the mXn picture element in one block. Based on the density -x, comparison 3 is given among the densities of each picture element. Then arithmetic circuits 7 and 8 calculate the mean densities V and W for the picture elements belonging to the groups the density value xij of which is larger and smaller than -x each. These mean densities are then coded with 8 bits to be delivered (b) and (c) each. On the other hand, arithmetic circuits 10 and 11 calculate the mean values Q and R of the absolute value of deviation of V and W each, and the outputs (d) and (e) are coded with 4 bits. Then the threshold level is set epsilon1 and epsilon0 to Q and R respectively as the reference value of each level. And the level relation F between Q/R and epsilon1/epsilon0 is coded with the 2-bit code length and based on the specified relative formula, and then an adaptive coding is given to the bit train.
