Abstract

PURPOSE:To display the magnitude in sensitivity of cracks in a granule field caused by corrosion, i.e., the degree of sensitization by utilizing the relationship between the combining strength in the crystal granule field of a metal and the hardness thereof. CONSTITUTION:By employing stainless steel (e.g.: SUS304TP, C=0.065%) as a test material, the degree of sensitization against the cracks caused by stress corrosion is quantitatively displayed by the ratio between its micro-vickers hardness and the hardness under the condition the steel is subjected to a solidly soluble thermal treatment. That is, through the sesitizing treatment, is yielded a layer wherein solidly dissolved Cr is absent by the deposition of chrome-carbide in the vicinity of the crystal granules in the crystal granule field of said stainless steel. For example, chrome-carbide is dissolved during the treatment by corrosive solutin, the combining strength between the crystal granule field becomes small. Therefore, when the test material is measured by a hardness tester, the compressed recess by the compressing part of the hardness tester becomes large. With respect to the material which is subjected to a solidly soluble thermal treatment, since chrome is uniformly distributed in the granules, no change will occur in the combining strength of the crystal granule even though the material is treated by the corrosive solution. Therefore, difference in hardness before and after the corrosion test will not occur.
