Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain roadbed thickness measurement at many points without disturbing the roadbed by driving a measuring bar having a groove into the roadbed and by examining the height of soil intruded in the groove. CONSTITUTION:A grooved roadbed thickness measuring bar comprises a steel rod with a sharp point and a handle 5 fixed to the steel rod at the upper end thereof. A groove 3 extends between a support 2 for an indicator piece 4 and the upper end of the steel rod. The steel rod is graduated along the groove 3, thus forming a gauge bar 6. The indicator piece 4 is slidably fitted in the groove 3. In measuring the roadbed thickness, the gauge bar 6 is driven into the roadbed, then the soil intrudes into the groove 3 and causes the indicator piece 4 to slide up along the groove 3. After drawing out the gauge rod 6 from the roadbed, the roadbed thickness is indicated by the position of the indicator piece 4 relative to the graduation.
