Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a device of a small size and simple construction and operation which is provided with both input function and display function by providing display electrodes and electrodes for detecting electrostatic capacity on one side of a liquid crystal display panel and having the user's touch of the display panel read by the detecting electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Display electrodes 24 are constituted of, for example, segments 25, into a -shape on a liquid crystal display panel 21, and detecting electrodes 26 encircled by the segments 25 are provided. As shown in the figure, the panel 21 is provided with a reflection plate 27 on the lowermost step, then a polarizing plate 28, a glass plate 29, and a transparent counter electrode 30 in this order, is provided with a poralizing plate 36 in the uppermost part, then the electrodes 34 of the above-described segments 25 and contact detecting electrodes 35 (26) on the glass plate 32 by means of a sealing material 31, and is sealed therein with a liquid crystal 35. When the finger 22 touches the panel 21, the distance between the electrodes 30 and 35 changes partially, and the change in the electrostatic capacity between both electrodes is detected, whereby the touched character is read in. There is no need for any special device such as write pen, and the device is miniaturized.
