Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily produce titled polymer without using an organic solvent, by dissolving a chlorinated polyolefin in an acrylic monomer and polymerizing the resulting solution in an aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: 70W10pts.wt. Chlorinated polyolefin (CPO) obtained by chlorinating a polyolefin to a chlorination degree of about 60W70wt%, is dissolved in 30W 90pts.wt. acrylic monomer, e.g., methyl (meth)acrylate or butyl (meth)acrylate. Then, the resulting solution is suspension-polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of a catalyst, e.g., benzoyl peroxide, a chain transfer agent, e.g., lauryl mercaptan, a dispersion stabilizer, e.g., polyvinyl alcohol. The product is separated, washed and dried to yield an acryl-modified CPO.
