Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture calcium carbonate almost free from flocculated particles and having superior dispersibility by carbonating an aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide having a specified concn. while agitating it with an agitating blade under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide having 15W40wt% concn. is carbonated with gaseous CO2 fed under pressure while being agitated with an agitating blade under conditions giving 100W50,000 Reynolds number defined by the equation [where ρ is the density of the suspension, (n) is the number of rotations (rps) of the blade, D is the diameter (cm) of the blade and μ is the viscosity (poise) of the suspension]. When the concn. of the used suspension is <15wt% flocculation is not well prevented in the carbonation reaction, and fine particles are formed to cause flocculation in a drying process. When the concn. exceeds 40wt%, the suspension does not uniformly contact with gaseous CO2, resulting in increased unevenness in particle size due to local reaction.
