Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable to measure the EGR rate in stable by a method wherein the internal pressures of respective cylinders are extracted at each proper point before or after the upper dead point of a crank angle to obtain a pressure ratio thereof and the EGR rate is determined from the characteristic of this pressure ratio and the EGR rate.
CONSTITUTION: The pressure in a combustion chamber is detected by a pressure sensor 10 while the crank angle is detected by a crank angle sensor 12 and the values of the pressures Pa, Pb at an angle α before or after the upper dead point are converted in an A/D convertor 11 to memorize them into a memory 13. The value of Pa/Pb is operated at every cycle in a division circuit 14 from the signal memorized in the memory circuit 13 to determine the EGR rate by an EGR rate determining circuit 15 based on the operated value. Various signals regarding to the conditions of the engine operation are inputted into this circuit 15 except the operated values of Pa/Pb, and data for determining the EGR rate are utilized to improve the accuracy of the measurement by selecting from these various signals in accordance with the necessities thereof.
