Abstract

PURPOSE: A partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol bearing anionic hydrophilic groups on side chains is used as a suspension stabilizer to produce a polyvinyl chloride with high porosity, high transparency and high volume resistivity.
CONSTITUTION: A partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol with an average molecular weight of 200W2,600 and a saponification degree of less than 95mol%, bearing 0.02W5mol% of anionic hydrophilic groups on the side chains, is used preferably by 0.02W0.1wt% to effect the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride. Examples of anionic hydrophilic groups are carboxyl or sulfate ester and they can be introduced into polyvinyl alcohol by saponifying a copolymer from an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or its ester such as dimethyl maleate and vinyl acetate.
