Abstract
PURPOSE: A complex catalyst consisting of rhodium, as a major component, which is relatively readily available, thorium oxide and silica is used to produce the titled compound used as industrial raw material from carbon oxides and hydrogen in high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: The catalytic reaction of carbon oxides and a hydrogen-containing gas is conducted in the presence of a complex catalyst consisting of (A) rhodium, as a major component, (B) thorium oxide, vanadium oxide, niobium oxide and/or tantalum oxide and (C) silica wherein preferably the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is 10/1W1/10, (B) to (C) is 10/1W1/10 and the amount of component (A) is 0.01W 25wt% preferably 0.1Wabout 10wt%, based on the total weight of the catalyst, thus producing ethanol as a main product. Usually the ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen is 20/1W1/20, preferably 5/1W1/5.
