Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve tenacity of a welded zone in electron beam welding by forming a faultless weld bead in the first pass and making the bead narrow width in the second and succeeding passes and making effective use of welding work by low heat input.
CONSTITUTION: In electron beam welding, a defectless weld bead 1 is first formed in the first pass. Then, a weld bead smaller in width than that of the first pass is placed in the second and succeeding passes. By this method, the weld metal (f) and bond (g) of the second pass and bond (h) of the first pass are improved in Charpy impact value compared with the first pass welding. In this method, a desirable result can be obtained by making the bead width BW2 of the second and succeeding passes within the range of 0.9BW1≥BW2≥0.3BW1, where BW1 is the bead width of the first pass.
