Abstract

PURPOSE: Raw cherry leaves are dipped in an aqueous medium in an air-tightly sealed vessel and treated with a specifically reduced pressure, then pickled in an aqueous medium, thus producing pickled cherry leaves which are uniformly and clearly colored like tortoiseshell or raw rubber.
CONSTITUTION: Raw leaves of cherry are dipped in an aqueous medium such as water or a salt solution, which is put in an air-tightly sealed vessel and treated with reduced pressure, further pickled in an aqueous medium, whereby the pickled cherry leaves are obtained. The preferred aqueous medium is water or an aqueous solution of nontoxic inorganic salt such as potassium chloride solution of less than 16° Baume. The treatment under reduced pressure is conducted at a vacuum higher than 700mmHg for longer than 1min. For example, 1,000 bundles of raw cherry leaves in which one bundle includes 50 cherry leaves is placed in an air-tightly sealed iron vessel and 500l of water is poured. Then, the leaf bundles are made sank by placing an wooden inner lid bearing scantlings on the water surface and a vacuum is produced by sucking with a vacuum pump and the vacuum treatment is repeated under 750mmHg for 2min.
