PURPOSE:To stabilize the surface potential of a photorecepter by irradiating the photoreceptor with the 1st light ranging from the wavelength with which light is transmitted in a photosensitive layer to the visible range and with the 2nd light from the wavelength range where the transmission in the photosensitive layer is diabled to the wavelingth range where the transmission is enabled during prescribed periods. CONSTITUTION:As the 1st light, light ranging from the wavelength range enough for transmission in a photosensitive layer to the visible range is used and as the 2nd light, light from the wavelength range where the transmission in the photosensitive layer is substantially disabled to that where it is enabled is used. On the start of a device, the 1st lamp 2 is turned on as for a long time as photoreceptor 1 rotates once and the light fatigue of the photoreceptor is caused by light of wavelength lambda1, lowering the initial surface potential. Then, the 2nd lamp 3 is turned on throughout the operation of the device to set the surface potential at a presecribed level while relieving photoreceptor 1. This constitution stabilizes the surface potential of the photoreceptor at the required level.
