Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the thickness of an oil film with accuracy, after metallic contact occurring between metallic surfaces, by measuring the time constant of voltage variation between the metallic surfaces at the time of elimination of the metallic contact.
CONSTITUTION: The voltage from a constant voltage generating power source E is impressed through a resistor R0 onto an oil film existing between arc surfaces of conductive metallic cylinders A and B. Partial metallic contact occurs between the metallic surfaces during rotating operation of the metallic cylinders A and B. A time constant of momentary voltage variation between the metallic cylinders A and B occurring at the time of elimination of the metallic contact is measured. On the basis of this time constant, an electric capacity corresponding to an oil film between the metallic surfaces is sought, and on the basis of this electric capacity, thickness of the oil film is deduced.
