Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve a surface defect detecting accuracy by irradiating a plurality of rays of light at different angles onto a surface of a moving object. CONSTITUTION:A visual field of a television camera 2 on a surface of a moving object 1, such as a steel material is divided into a plurality of equal parts which are parallel to one another in the direction in which the object 1 is moved. The divisional regions A-D are illuminated with substantially parallel rays of light emitted in different directions from light sources 31-34, respectively. Accordingly, surface images of the regions A-D, which are illuminated in different directions and at different angles, are displayed side by side on a frame of a monitor television set 4. A specific portion of the surface of the moving object 1 is irradiated first with the rays of light from the light source 34, and the rays of light are reflected to the visual fied D. As a result, a defect of a special character appears on a zone D of the frame of the monitor television set 4. While a specific portion of the object 1 advances to the visual fields C, B, A in order, defects of special character corresponding to the rays of light from the light sources 33, 32, 31 are detected in the same manner as mentioned above. Therefore, the surface defect detecting accuracy can be improved without using an increased number of photographing units.
