Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the number of component parts and to accomplish optimal control on recirculation of exhaust gas, by storing information concerning the amount of NOx discharged per unit horsepower of engine in relation to the load, and controlling an exhaust-gas recirculation controlling means on the basis of the above information. CONSTITUTION:In order to keep the amount of NOx contained in the exhaust gas over a wide load range, it is necessary to keep the ratio of the amount Ge of recirculated exhaust gas including residual gas to the amount Ga of air constant as shown in the drawing. For this purpose, movement of accelerator pedal 26 is detected by positional sensor 27 and information of the load requirement is put into microcomputor 28. The microcomputor 28 calculates required values of Ga and Ge from the graph shown in the drawing and controls throttle valve 31 and exhaust- gas recirculation valve 31 by means of actuators 29, 30 such that said required values of Ga and Ge can be obtained. Thus, the amount of NOx to the load can be reduced correctly. Further, since the required amount of air to a given load is varied with the air-fuel ratio of mixture, control must be made also in consideration of this fact.
