Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform a thermal insulating performance test in the conditions closely resembling an actual duct or the like by attaching a substance to be tested around the circumferential surface of a columnar heating element controlled at a constant temperature, and measuring the power consumption of an electric heater heating said columnar heating element. CONSTITUTION:A columnar heating element 1 is formed from a thick tubular hollow body 1a made of a metal of excellent thermal conductivity, an electric heater 1b concentrically provided in said hollow portion and thermal insulating plates 1c. The columnar heating body 1 is supported in a constant temperature chamber 2 in a cantilever manner and controlled at a preset temperature by manipulating the power supply to the electric heater 1b by means of a temperature controlling meter 4 through an operating device 5 according to the value detected by a temperature detecting terminal 3 fitted into the tubular hollow body 1a. A tubular substance S to be tested is attached around the whole circumferential surface of the columnar heating element 1, and the power consumption of the electric heater 1b is measured by means of a wattmeter 6. The heat transmission resistance or the thermal insulating performance of the substance S being tested can be calculated from said power consumption, the difference between the temperature in the constant temperature chamber 2 and the preset temperature, and the surface area.
