Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase processing speed and perform accurate focus detection by performing AD conversion of image information in parallel with one AD converter. CONSTITUTION:Part of the image of an object 1 is passed through a photographing optical system 2 and is projected into a photodetector 3 having multiple photodetecting regions (picture element regions). After the image information is converted parallelly to digital information by an AC conversion circuit 4, it is taken into a central processing unit 5. Here, the absolute values of the difference in the digital values corresponding to the image information of, for example, adjacent picture element regions are calculated and the focus detection signal expressing the total sum of these absolute values as an evaluation function is obtained. This signal is displayed in a display device 6, and displaces the optical system 2 in the optical axis direction shown by an arrow by way of an optical system driving circuit 7 and an optical system driving device 8, whereby focus controlling is accomplished. Thereby, the processing speed is increased and the accurate focus detection is accomplished.
