PURPOSE:To enable discrimination of the level by means of a comparatively simple constitution of circuits by comparing a voltage signal and a measured signal taking an upper-limit voltage value and a lower-limit voltage value alternately. CONSTITUTION:A recording signal is supplied to a recording head 5 through the intermediary of an input terminal 1, an input amplifier 2, an FM modulating circuit 3 and a recording amplifier 4, while the output of a regenerative head is inputted in the comparator 28 of a signal level discriminating device 17 through the intermediary of a head amplifier 7, an FM demodulating circuit 8 and an output amplifier 9. Meanwhile, the flat reference voltage from a reference voltage 22 is added to the output of a reference rectangular-wave generating circuit 23 at an addition circuit 24 and later is inputted in a comparison circuit 28. Accordingly, in the case when a discriminated voltage signal Vi is higher than the upper-limit voltage value, a luminous diode 35 is made luminous, while in the case when it is lower than the lower-limit voltage value, a luminous diode 33 is made luminous. And, when the discriminated voltage value is located between the upper-limit and lower-limit voltage values, the luminous diodes 33 and 35 are put on and off alternately, which is perceived as if both diodes are lighted simultaneously. By this constitution, the level can be discriminated by one comparator.
