Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a low-molecular aromatic dihydroxy ester useful as a polyester intermediate, by condensing a dihydric phenol compound with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichloride in a specific proportion in the presence of a basic inorganic compound.
CONSTITUTION: To (A) an aqueous phase containing (a) 1mol of a dihydric phenol compound represented by formula I, II or III, wherein Y1 and Y2 are each H, Cl, Br or a lower alkyl and Z is a linear or branched alkylene of up to 9C or a bridging group such as -O- or -S- and (b) 0.1W1.6mol of a basic inorganic compound such as NaOH or KOH, is added, with vigorous stirring, (B) an organic solvent solution phase containing (C) a dissolved aromatic discarboxylic acid dichloride in an amount providing a mol ratio of (a), of 0.1W1.0, over a period of 5minW16hr at 0W100°C, thereby to produce a low-molecular aromatic dihydroxy ester containing an aromatic dihydroxy ester having one and/or two repeating structural untis derived from (a) and (c).
