Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity crude zinc oxide free from soot by burning fuel gas having a predetermined calorific value with air introduced from a desired position when zinc-contg. starting material is subjected to roasting reduction in a rotary kiln to recover zinc.
CONSTITUTION: Zinc-contg. starting mterial is roasted in a rotary kiln to reduct and volatilize zinc and recover crude zinc oxide. In this method low-calorie fuel or fuel gas such as propane gas or kerosene having 2,000W5,000kcal/Nm3 calorific value is blown into the kiln, and air is introduced from a desired position of the kiln to burn the gas in succession. Thus, the atmosphere in the kiln is adjusted so as to maintain a uniform temp. distribution over a long range. As a result, the formation of decomposed carbon is prevented, and high-purity crude zinc oxide not polluted by soot and usable as starting material zinc is obtd.
