Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare homogeneous metallic powder for powder metallurgy or the like in a high yield by a method wherein when atomizing a molten metal using a gas flow, the outflow rate of the molten metal and the amount of high-pressure gas jetted are controlled and the temperature in a chamber is kept constant.
CONSTITUTION: The molten metal in a turn-dish 1 flows downwards through a turn-dish nozzle 2 and through a chamber, and is atomized and cooled by the high- pressure gas flow to be metallic powder. In this device, an electromagnetc pump 10 is arranged around the nozzle 2 and an electromagnetic force is controlled in accordance with the reduction of the head of the melt in the turn-dish 1, thereby regulating the outflow rate of the melt. In addition, a stopper 11 having a tapered tip end part 12 is inserted into the nozzle 2, to regulate the effective aperture area of the nozzle 2 in accordance with the reduction of the head of the melt, thereby regulating the outflow rate of the melt. Furthermore, the flow rate of the gas is set to be higher at the initial stage of atomization and to be gradually reduced toward the final stage of atomization, for instance, by providing an opening-controllable solenoid valve in a supply pipe for the high-pressure gas.
