Abstract
PURPOSE:To form an optical switching element free from reflection loss by adding total reflection prisms of polygonal columns on the reflection surfaces of a pentagonal prism. CONSTITUTION:Prisms 101, 102 polygonal columns, for example, roof shape, of glass or the like having plural total reflection surfaces are added to the reflection surfaces 61, 62 of a pentagonal prism 5 adjacent to the diametrically opposing two side faces of the internal angle 90 deg.. If a ray 31 is entered roughly perpendicuraly to one of the two diametrically opposing side faces of the internal angle 90 deg., the ray 31 is reflected successively on the reflection surfaces of the prisms 101, 102, and is taken out as a roughly perpendicular ray 32 from the other side face of the diametrically opposing side faces of the internal angle 90 deg.. By the addition of such prisms, the incident angle of light is increased and the light is taken out with no losses. Hence, if this element is used as an optical switching element in place of the pentagonal prism 5 alone, the optical path is changed over with no losses. In this way, the loss-free switching element utilizing total reflection is formed.
