Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease the thermal strain of te luminous tube of an electric lamp, and obviate any crack generation in the tube by preparing it from a high-purity quartz glass of a low alkali concentration, which is added with an amount within a given range of an oxide of a group III metal. CONSTITUTION:A high-purity quartz glass containing below 20ppm (mol) of alkali impurities, is mixed with 100-3,000ppm (mol) of an oxide of a group III metal in the periodic table such as aluminum, gallium or indium, thus a material for the luminous tube of an electric lamp being prepared. As a result, any thermal strain developed in the luminous tube can be made exceedingly small. Consequently, when the end of a discharge electrode 1 is buried in and fixed to an electrode supporting part 3, any crack generation in the part 3 which might be caused due to thermal strain can be prevented.
