Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a stable medium contrast image and make the system compact by using an optical system that changes the area of the section of scanning beams and providing an optical element having a thin film optical guide. CONSTITUTION:A light beam is emitted from the exit end face of an optical element 11 at varying sizes of the imaging spot, and the exit light thereof is collimated with a lens 16, and is deflected by a light scanner 17 such as rotary polyhedral mirror. The imaging spot thereof is formed on a photosensitive drum 19 by way of an imaging lens 18. The element 11 consists of an optical guide 21 of a thin film formed on a substrate 20. The exit beam from a laser light source 12 is paralleld by a lens 13, and the parallel beams are deflected by the surface elastic waves by a comb-shaped electrode 16. These are converged by a lens 14, and the light source face image 26 is formed on the exit end face of the guide. This face image 26 is applied to an exit aperture 27, then the section of the exit beam change and the sectional area changes according to the frequencies of the surface elastic waves.
