Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate a problem of the quality of cooling water for a mold by spray-coating a temp.-sensitive magnetic material on the outside wall surface of the mold to form a film thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A spot facing of a predetermined shape is beforehand performed on the outside wall of a mold 1 in the level detecting position for the molten steel 5 in the mold 1. After this spot-faced surface is pretreated, a power material or wire material having been controlled to the alloy components of the temp.-sensitive magnetic material is spray-coated, whereby a spray-coated film 7 is formed. The film 7 changes its specific magnetic permeability with a temp. change owing to the level change of the molten steel 5, and the impedance of a detecting coil 4 separately opposing said film 7 changes. This change is measured, whereby the molten steel level is detected. At this time, the film 7 does not peel off even if the cooling water for mold 6 is inferior in quality.
