Abstract
PURPOSE:To generate a simulated optical signal which has the similar arbitrary band characteristics of an optical fiber in a simple structure, by employing a Thomsen filter with quartic or more dimensions whose attenuating characteristics are the same as the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A cutoff frequency f3dB is based on an equation II for the Thomson filter 2 with quartic or more dimensions whose attenuating characteristic is square Gauss characteristic. A frequency band fCL is based on an equation I for the optical fiber whose attenuation characteristics is the square Gauss characteristic. If the cutoff frequency f3dB is selected so as to obtain fCL/(2<1/2>)with respect to the frequency band fCL, an electrical signal from an analog or digital signal generator 1 is applied to an LED4 via the filter 2 and a light emitting element driving circuit 3. The amount of light emission of the LED4 linearly varies with the amplitude of the applied electric signal. Therefore, the arbitrary band characteristics of the optical fiber can be simulated in a simple structure, the optical signal is outputted, and the accurate test of the optical transmission system can be performed. In this case alpha and alpha' are the optical-signal and the electrical-signal attenuating quantities, respectively, and f is the frequency in the band.
