Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten a focusing detection time by dividing a self-scanning type image pickup element into two areas, and deciding a reset time for integrating a difference of the time series output in each area, as a time required by the time when an integral value of the sum of the time series outputs in each area attains to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:A light beam which has been emitted from the light source 2 is reflected by the prism 4 and the object surface 5, and is made incident into the self- scanning type image pickup element 3. This element 3 is driven by the driving circuit 18, and its time series output is inputted to the analog gate 31 which becomes on only in a prescribed time section, through the AC amplifier 9, etc. The integrating circuits 13, 21 integrate a difference signal and a sum signal in two areas of the image pickup element 3, respectively. After the integration has been executed a few times, when the output of 21 attains to a prescribed value, or becomes the longest reset time, the sample holding circuit 14 holds the output of the integrating circuit 13, and resets the integrating circuits 13, 21 through the delay circuit 17. The focusing is controlled in accordance with the hold value.
