Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled catalytic body which comprises using the composite material formed of a heat-resistant base material and a porous melt-sprayed layer consisting of a high m.p. material formed on the surface thereof as a carrier, and carrying a metallic catalyst of platinum group thereon and which can be worked to free shapes, has superior mechanical strength and heat resistance and withstands the use in a high-temp. atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A porous layer of a high m.p. material (e.g.; Al2O3, TiO2, etc.) is formed by plasma melt-spraying or the like on a heat resistant base material (e.g.; Fe-Cr alloy) having been prepared to 1W10μm surface roughness by sandblasting or the like. The thickness of this porous layer is 5W200μm, more particularly preferably 30W80μm. The resultant composite material has 0.01W1.0m2/g surface area preferably. Thence, on this composite material as a carrier, an aqueous soln. of chloride etc. of platinum group metals such as Pt and Rh is stuck on the surface thereof by coating, dipping, etc., and this is subjected to reduction treatment in the atmosphere or in a hydrogen atmosphere, whereby the intended catalytic body for purification of waste gases is obtained.
