Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus efficient for the continuous fermentation or catalytic reaction, by placing two or more units each having a maximum diameter in the intermediate point and tapered to the top and the bottom and openings at the top and the bottom thereof in the vertical direction.
CONSTITUTION: For example, two or more units each having a conical part 2 at the upper part, a conical part 3 at the lower part and a short cylindrical part 1 of maximum diameter over a suitable range from the center thereof are placed on top of each other in the vertical direction in two or more layers. A gas dispersing plate 4 e.g. a perforated plate, is provided at the bottom of the lowermost unit and equipped with a gas supply chamber 7 having a gas supply pipe 5 and a drain trap 6. A liquid supply pipe 8 opened to the vicinity of the bottom of the conical part 3 of the lowermost unit is provided tangentially. A gas outlet 9 and moromi (unrefined alcohol) delivery outlet 10 are joined to the top unit. The oxidation reaction or anaerobic fermentation by an immobilized enzyme in the apparatus is carried out efficiently with prevented reduction of vortex flow rate by rising air bubbles and accelerated downward flow of partial microbial cells, liquid and small air bubbles along the wall of the upper conical part 2.
