Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce size and weight by holding a semiconductor laser in a manner as to face the surface of an optical disc which is rotatably supported and approaching the laser light radiation end face of this semiconductor laser to the surface of the optical disc. CONSTITUTION:An optical disc 10 is placed on a transparent or translucent turntable 11, whilist a semiconductor laser 14 is mounted to an arm opposedly to the surface of the disc 10. If the laser light radiation end face 14a of the semiconductor laser 14 and the information recording surface of the optical disc 10 are made approached and the spacing therebetween is held at <=1mum for example, the information is read at the same degree as that of conventional resolving power. In this case, there is no need at all for the conventional optical system consisting of lenses and mirrors and therefore, the apparatus is correspondingly simplified and is produced inexpensively.
