Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify signal processing and to eliminate the need for a mechanical motion part, by finding the correlation between the image of many floating particles in an electrophoretic tube and that a certain time later. CONSTITUTION:Thin platelike region 5 in electrophoretic tube 1 which has electrodes 2 and 3 contains a liquid with floating particles is lightened by a light source and the image of the lightened region is formed on photodetector 6. The photodetector consists of one-dimensional array of many photodetecting elements, which can be scanned respectively to read out their outputs. In the ending of the lighting period, signals read out of array element 6 are stored in memories M1 and M2 and the previous contents of M1 are transferred to memory M3. Then, the contents of memories M3 and M2 are read out, address by address, successively and multiplied mutually by multiplying circuit X; and the results are integrated by register R and while the starting readout address of memory M2 is shifted by one, the same operation is repeated. Thus, the mean value of a correlative function is obtained and the mobility of floating particles in the solution during the electrophoresis can be measured.
