Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid in high yield, by the reaction of an olefin and O2 in an aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid selected from ≥2C monocarboxylic acids and ≥3C di- or polycarboxylic acids in the presence of a catalyst containing Pd.
CONSTITUTION: A 3W4C olefin is contacted with O2-containing gas in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst containing Pd to given an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g., methacrylic acid). The reaction is carried out in an aqueous solution of at least one sort of carboxylic acid selected from ≥2C (pref. ≤6C) monocarboxylic acids e.g. acetic acid, and a ≥3C (pref. ≤12C) di- and polycarboxylic acids, e.g. malonic acid. The carboxylic acid concentration in the aqueous solution is preferably 1W20wt%, and the pH of the solution is less than 3.
