Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an air electrode or an oxygen electrode having small polarization and high energy-density which hardly causes drop in voltage even in the range of high current-density, by using an air electrode or an oxygen electrode which contains cobalt phthalocyanine. CONSTITUTION:A mixture powder containing both a carbon substance such as a carbon powder, active carbon, a graphite or acetylene black, and a water repellent, is either mixed or impregnated with cobalt phthalocyanine to make cobalt phthalocyanine to be held in the mixture powder. After that, this mixture powder together with a metal net made of nickel, silver or the like are subjected to pressure molding, before the molded body is heated and sintered, thus an air electrode or an oxygen electrode being obtained. Here, cobalt phthalocyanine which contains phthalocyanine having a flat-structure ring, the center of which has a metal-complex structure in which a cobalt atom exists as a coordination-center metal, works as an effective catalyst, since oxygen molecules are easily attracted by the metal-complex part through the interaction between the 3d-orbital electrons of the cobalt atom and the antibonding pi-electrons of the oxygen molecules.
